Ibex the nvidia flicker is back?

Postby NYbill on 09 Nov 2008, 16:33

(oops i should have put this in the support section. you guys can move it if you'd like)

anyone else getting a screen flicker in Ibex? this used to happen for me a long time ago. like in warty or something. a fix came along back then and the flicker was fixed. now, its back for me. i have a nVidia Geforce Go 7900 GS. while watching:

/system/NVIDIA x server settings/PowerMizer

i see that the flicker happens when ever the performance level for the card goes up or down. well, i'll have to look into a fix for this. because i'm tweaking compiz and its flickering a lot.

(on a compiz note, that "cube reflection and deformation" with the "deformation sphere" option on is quite neat! now i'm spinning a ball with a animated space background. good stuff.)

ahh... you guys can delete this thread. this problem is well documented all over the net.
seems the work around is to add:

options nvidia NVreg_RegistryDwords="PerfLevelSrc=0x2222"
options nvidia NVreg_Mobile=1

to

/etc/modprobe.d/options

its basically locking the GPU power scalling. on the second line:

Mobile=0 (100MHz NV clock, 100MHz memory clock)
Mobile=1 (200MHz NV clock, 300MHz memory clock)
Mobile=2 (375MHz NV clock, 507MHz memory clock)

I've got the same level of flicker on Ibex with a Geforce 4 MX desktop as I did with Hardy. I just thought I had to change the refresh rate to something lower (at which I get headaches, so I just live with a very slight flicker in the bottom right.) But then again, I had this same problem under XP, so...

the problem i was having is like the whole screen going black for a split second.

i think i know what your describing though. i used to have that on a CRT monitor. yea, it is annoying! even worse in a room with florescent lights (that good old 60 Hz pulse). yea, its a head ache creator! i think i did correct that with the refresh rates. it was a long time ago. but, i think i had to make the refresh rate 75hz. its tricky stuff though. there are always those scary warnings that say the wrong setting can fry your monitor! you should be able to google up your monitors specs and see what ranges it can handle.
